October 2011 Archives
Left my siiters place early this morning. Saw a fawn standing beside the highway near Richer, manitoba and a small fox near Falcon Lake.
Then it got weird. I had just crossed into NWOntario and had driven about 2 kms when a large timber wolf walked onto the road. I braked hard and came to stop about 20 feet from him. He walked down the shoulder and around my van and stood about 3-4 feet away from my drivers window. I slowly reached for my camera as I started to roll the window ever so quietly. Not a good plan as he started growling at me. Time to roll the window back up. No pictures or video as it was 45 minutes before sunrise.
Saw beavers along the kenora bypass as well as duck and geese swimming in the early morning fog. Just after Dryden I saw a bald eagle sitting a tree. Too much traffic to stop safely.
The Winnipeg River was down about 2 feet, the Wabigoon River about 1.5 feet. !-2 feet down seemed to be the norm for all the creeks and lakes along the highway. had light snow flurries at raith this afternoon.
Drove up to Dog lake[Silver Falls Provincial Park]. The road is washboard for 2.6 kms. I think it was worth the drive. Nobody was up there camping. I go there because no hunting is alowed up there. Didn't know that there are 57 campsites there that the Ministry of Natural Resourses doesn't charge to camp. A few outhouses are located here as well. Did some HD video and took some pictures.
Also saw a few bald eagles along the way as well as a fox on River Road and 3 deer pon jaaska road in Kaministiquia.
This year has been very dry throughout the Thunder Bay area. McIntyre River looks like a small creek. In my years in Thunder Bay since 1966 never have I seen the river this low at this time of the year. Other small creeks that flow into the McIntyre and Neebing are almost non existanct.
Then there is the full moon right now. Usually we get frost and chili winter like weather. Not this year. Warm and no frost. Go figure. maybe this is the start of global warming. Time will tell.
All the way to town to see 2 deer near Belrose Road and John Street. Government Road has its' fair share as well as Mapleward Road. A flock of geese where heading south over Dawson Road just above the trees in the fog.
saw a bald eagle sitting in a tree about 20 feet from Mapleward Road near John Street. watched him for 2-3 minutes. left my video camera and camera at home. Colours were nice, but the wind was blowing leaves off the trees.
Weather girls says no rain for the weekend. Hope she is right. Get out there and enjoy the colours. Just leave your foot steps. Photograph or film the colours to make those dreay days of winter brighter.
made a quick trip to Sleeping Giant park this morning. The red maples are just about done, but managed to film about 70-15 second clips from Pass lake to Silver Islet and back. My camera batteries were dead, but having a 10.2 mp in the video camera was a plus. Did take about 15 photos. Will post some to my web site this week.
Did manage to see and film 5 deer, 1 partridge, a porcupine as well as viewing several small birds. Going back next weekend to get the remaining colours. Batteries will be charged tis time.
